Anne Kinderman, MD and Heather Harris, MD
co-authored a recent publication entitled
“Starting and Sustaining Palliative Care in Public Hospitals: Lessons Learned from a Statewide Initiative.”
The aim of this article was to use the experiences from the statewide Spreading Palliative Care in Public Hospitals Initiative (SPCPHI) to describe the unique challenges to providing palliative care in public hospitals; the major barriers to initiating, growing, and sustaining palliative care programs in public hospitals; and the common solutions to overcoming those barriers.
Drs. Edgar Pierluissi, and Ken Covinsky (SFVAMC) and Clinical Nurse Specialist Annelie Nilsson are featured in an NPR newstory, Hospital Units Tailored To Older Patients Can Help Prevent Decline, that aired August 9, 2016. The piece highlights the risks that older adults face when they are hospitalized. Dr. Covinsky’s research establishes the centrality of functioning in the care of an older adult. Dr. Pierluissi established the first ACE unit in the state at the ZSFG. Annelie Nilsson is a clinical nurse leader on the ZSFG ACE unit.
